Protected Species: Badgers
Badgers and their setts are protected under the Protection of Badgers Act (1992). Badgers are widespread throughout the British Isles and will dig setts in a wide variety of habitats from woodland and hedgerows to stockpiles and archaeological sites. Badgers are frequently encountered during development and the statutory authorities require surveys to be undertaken and, if necessary, a Mitigation Scheme to be submitted before development can be permitted. We offer the following services with respect to badgers:
- Initial field surveys to identify presence of badgers through the identification of setts, foraging areas, paths and latrines.
- More detailed surveys in the form of bait marking and territory mapping.
- Preparation of reports to support planning applications.
- Design and implementation of mitigation schemes, including sett closure and creation of artificial setts.
