Protected Species: Crayfish
White-clawed crayfish receive partial protection under the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981) (as amended). White-clawed crayfish are also a priority Biodiversity Action Plan species and therefore receive policy protection under Planning Policy Statement 9: Biodiversity and Geological Conservation. This protection means that where white-clawed crayfish may be affected, the statutory authorities require surveys to be undertaken and, if necessary, a Mitigation Scheme to be submitted before development can be permitted.
White-clawed crayfish are found throughout the UK in streams, rivers and lakes (including gravel pits) and are often encountered during development projects. Our company employs experienced and licensed surveyors for white-clawed crayfish. We can provide the following services in-house:
- Full suite of survey techniques including habitat survey, manual search, trapping and night-viewing.
- Preparation of reports to support planning applications.
- Design and implementation of mitigation schemes, including minimising or avoiding impact, exclusion from construction areas, trapping and relocation projects, habitat creation and restoration and monitoring.
- Obtaining Natural England conservation licences
