Botanical Survey: Hedgerows

Ancient and/ or species-rich hedgerows are important habitats in their own right, and in reflection of their ecological and historical value, some hedgerows are protected under the Hedgerow Regulations (1997).  Over 600 plant species, 1500 insects, 65 birds and 20 mammals have been recorded at some time living or feeding in hedgerows.  They are especially important for butterflies and moths, farmland birds, bats and dormice.  We undertake hedgerow surveys using the standard survey methodology in the Hedgerow Survey Handbook (2nd edition) (DEFRA, 2007) and our appraisal includes an assessment as to whether a hedgerow is deemed ‘important’ under the Hedgerow Regulations.
